This Itinera thematic issue asks how urban land, housing, and real-estate credit shaped the economies of the late medieval and early modern periods. Case studies from Paris, Vienna, Basel, Bruges, and the Netherlands meet programmatic essays and methodological contributions that reposition the urban land market as a driver of premodern economic transformation in its own right. The volume combines historiographical critique with perspectives on social strata and institutions (particularly ecclesiastical actors), alongside digital methods such as GIS, named-entity recognition, machine learning, and rule-based workflows, to render property, debt, and spatial organization visible at scale. From the interplay of close source reading and reproducible data workflows emerges a picture of how mixed asset portfolios, mortgage-like instruments, and court enforcement underpinned urban wealth, and how digitized sources open up new historical interpretations.
